Art in the Domestic Setting

This salon discussion looks at the history of art in the domestic setting, the way it is
being reinterpreted in the contemporary art world, the possible challenges it poses to
artists/dealers and why it is both a viable and important model for looking at art.

Claressinka Anderson is a curator and artist based in Los Angeles. She has been
involved in several curatorial projects at venues including Tarryn Teresa Gallery and
JAIL gallery. She has also widely exhibited in Los Angeles and the U.K. She is the
director of Marine, a contemporary art salon in Santa Monica.

Shana Nys Dambrot is an art critic, curator and author based in Los Angeles.
Her fine art & design reviews, features and interviews have appeared in regional,
national, international and online publications including Modern Painters,
Art Review, Artweek, Art Ltd, ARTnews, Whitehotmagazine.com, The Believer,
tema celeste, Art Asia Pacific, and Juxtapoz. She is currently the LA Managing

Anne Martens is an artist and arts writer. Her writing has appeared in numerous
publications, most recently Flash Art and Artillery, and has garnered awards from
the Maryland Arts Commission and the American Association of Museums. Her art
explores intersections between public and private identity through fashion-inspired
sculptural works. Anne earned an MFA from The Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester,
NY. and an MA in Journalism from The University of Maryland.

Chris Natrop is an artist based in Los Angeles. His cut-paper installations have been
exhibited widely in the U.S. and Europe. He is a recent Pulse Prize awardee and has
an upcoming solo show at Taylor De Cordoba in Los Angeles.

Armando H. Torres is an artist, shoemaker and curator and has exhibited work
throughout California, New York and Europe. Currently he is the director of
Underground Gallery – an alternative “domestic space” that he started about
2.5 years ago in Silver Lake.
